21 tips for success in life

The road to success requires patience and determination. The process encourages you to define your objectives — they’re rarely the same for any two people. Achieving your goals after you’ve recognized them is intensely satisfying, and anyone can experience it. All you need is a strategy and a reason why. If you feel lost on how to start your journey, here are 21 useful tips for success.

1. Display Confidence

Carry yourself with confidence even if you don’t feel it. Exude it in your words, actions and behaviors, and it’ll become true.

2. Take Risks

Do something you normally wouldn’t, even if it scares you. Take a trip to somewhere unfamiliar or try a strange food. Start small, and in time you’ll excel at handling risks.

3. Acknowledge Mistakes

Understand the errors you make and how to resolve them, but remember they don’t define you. A notable quote from Barack Obama reads, “The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won’t. It’s whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it — whether you choose to persevere.”

4. Build Relationships

Humans require companionship to thrive. Reach out to your acquaintances whether these connections are professional or personal. Socializing is a big part of career success, so network whenever possible.

5. Find Your Passion

Do work you feel passionate about. And if you don’t know what your passion is, take a journey to find it. Working is a part of surviving, but you shouldn’t undertake stressful or uninspired jobs. Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh advises, “Stop chasing the money and start chasing the passion.”

6. Develop Mental Toughness

Mental toughness means staying resilient in the face of adversity. When obstacles block you, go around them. When problems knock you down, stand up again. Believe in your abilities and know that you control your outcome.

7. Take Breaks As Necessary

Rest when necessary — don’t push yourself to achieve goals. Hard work is important, but your abilities lessen when your body is exhausted. Give yourself time to relax whether it’s five minutes or 30.

8. Plan It

Have a gameplan for your goals. Write what you want and how you’re going to get there instead of making vague declarations. Buy a planner and fill your week with tasks to accomplish. The more detailed you are, the more likely you’ll be to meet your objectives.

9. Do More, Say Less

Planning is essential, but be mindful not to fall into the habit of mapping out strategies without completing them. Sometimes you have to dive straight into it. Spending too much time talking or thinking about your plans distracts you from the bigger picture.

10. Let Go of Regrets

Past mistakes can make you afraid to search for success within the present. We all get stuck sometimes, but you have to release regret to find peace. Move on to the next opportunity once the current one is over. Don’t berate yourself over what you could’ve done differently.

11. Avoid Impulsive Decisions

People commonly make rash decisions when angry or overwhelmed, but in moments like these, seek clarity. Ground yourself in the present and consider potential consequences. Move through life with intention instead of reacting harshly.

12. Foster Internal Motivation

You know what others want from you, but what do you desire? Make decisions from a place of intrinsic motivation rather than extrinsic. The rewards you reap mean more when you seek them for your satisfaction.

13. Practice Time Management

Carve out time for valuable moments and remove distractions. Your time is precious — avoid spending it on tasks that don’t enrich your life or complement your goals.

14. Forgive Yourself and Others

Forgive yourself for past regrets, and forgive others who’ve wronged you. Holding onto anger affects you more than anyone else. Channel this energy toward worthy endeavors.

15. Travel More Often

Traveling exposes you to new people, sights and places. Step out of your comfort zone and get in touch with different perspectives.

16. Nurture Your Health

You only have one body — care for it. Sleep, eat, laugh and acknowledge your limits.

17. Learn From Others

Seek out unknown experiences and perspectives. People get stuck in their biases over time, but refreshing your outlook remedies this.

18. Appreciate Your Accomplishments

Honor your victories no matter how small they may seem. Keep track of them to see how your success grows over time.

19. Establish a Growth Mindset

There’s always something new to learn. Acquire skills and remain open to developing your talents.

20. Shun Perfectionism

Perfection is unattainable, so don’t push yourself to those heights. Strive for success by doing your best.

21. Define Yourself

You’re the only person who can define who you are. Society’s influence matters, but establish your core identity outside of that.
