How to Work from Home Without Distractions
Driving to work every day can be the worst part of your job, especially if you live in a high traffic area. If you get the chance to work from home, you’ll want to take advantage of the extra time you get.
Whether you’re working from home for the day or have a full-time work from home job, distractions are inevitable. Even though you could be in a room by yourself, there are always going to be some distractions that tear you away from what you need to do.

Remove Outside Influences
The first thing you can do to prevent distractions is to take a look at your environment. What’s around you that could be producing distractions?
This will depend on where you decide to work and who else is home with you. Your potential distractions could be noisy neighbors, kids who are out of school or any number of things that are outside of your control. Do your best to limit these outside influences if you can.
Find a quiet space to work and really focus on what you have to do. If you need extra help, talk to yourself out loud to make your tasks feel more present.
You can also turn off notifications on your phone or laptop. You may need your phone to work, so figure out which way is right for you. Look up your phone settings to see how you can turn off notifications while still allowing certain calls to come through. Or just turn off your phone altogether.

If all else fails, try working with the WiFi off if you can. Find a period of time where you don’t need to be watching your inbox and just switch off the WiFi on your computer. You’ll have no choice but to dive headfirst into the work in front of you.

Zero In With Sound
Working from home means that you get to own your workspace. You don’t need to worry about what anyone around you thinks about what you’re doing. That’s why you should take advantage of how certain sounds can help you focus.
Play music or audiobooks to fill the silence around you. Silence can sometimes be good, but it can also have its own volume sometimes. Being too aware of the silence you’re sitting in could be what’s making you reach for your usual distractions.
Music has also been proven to boost your productivity. Here are some other ways music helps you work:
- It calms your anxious thoughts.
- It marks how much time has passed with each song.
- It lifts your mood by playing happy melodies.
Listen to classical music or other tunes that you don’t have memorized so you aren’t tempted to jam along with them. Play your music, audiobooks or whatever background noise you choose quietly. You should be able to hear it, but you should be able to hear your thoughts louder.
Set Reasonable Goals
When you’re not stuck in the office, it can feel like you have the freedom of the entire day in front of you. There aren’t any meeting rooms to sit in or lunchrooms to hang around. It’s good to use your time away from the office setting as an encouragement to get even more done, but are you setting goals that are too big?
The first expectation that may be asking too much of you is that you should work all day. Typing away while you also happen to make lunch will drain you and make you more exhausted later on. Instead, give yourself short breaks.
Use breaks to allow your brain time to breathe and your mind to wander. You’ll be able to focus more easily when you sit back down to work.
The same goes for setting small work goals. You may have an eight hour work day that won’t be interrupted, but that doesn’t mean you can finish a project that would take someone two weeks to do in the office.
Set reasonable goals for what needs to be done by the time you clock out. These might look like:
- Only answering a certain number of emails
- Typing a certain number of words
- Starting a new task every hour
The goals you set for yourself during each day will help dictate whether you feel successful or not by the time you stop for dinner. Be your own best work partner by starting small. As you conquer your goals, you’ll learn which ones are best to set for yourself and which ones are too much to handle.
Stay Determined to Succeed
One of the easiest things to do when you work from home is lose motivation. There’s no boss or team looking over your shoulder to make sure you’re on task. That’s why it’s critical to learn what motivates you the most while you’re working.
Hang up pictures of your family or where you’d like to travel as a reminder of what you’re working for. Create a dream board to place by your computer or a list of what you plan to do in the future to read over when you feel least like working.
Whatever you have to do, use your motivations to carry you through each work day. With these easy tips, you’ll block out all of your typical distractions and become a more productive and focused version of yourself.
