Leading a Happy and Healthy Home Life

It comes as no surprise that people are happier when they live in a positive household. This happiness is crucial as it relates significantly to a person’s health, contributing to overall wellness. So, what home life characteristics make people happy? Continue reading to find out what aspects of home-life contribute to happiness and health.


Danny Tanner had it right — a clean house is a happy house. Homes that are free of clutter, dirt and debris are often more calming and comfortable, making people feel at ease and, in turn, happy in their homes.

The cleanliness of a home also provides health benefits, as a clean and de-cluttered environment can help reduce stress. Also, homes that are regularly swept, dusted, vacuumed and cleaned oftentimes have less dust and allergens, making the home a safe space for those with seasonal allergies. Furthermore, disinfecting your home regularly can help kill germs and bacteria, decreasing the spreading of illness.

Open Communication

A home environment in which communication is encouraged makes for a happier place to be. When family members discuss their emotions, interests and daily lives, the home becomes a more caring and nurturing environment. People are naturally happier when they live in a place where they feel as though they are loved and what they have to say matters.

A household with open communication can also lead to improved health, especially mental health. People who feel like their opinions and ideas matter have higher levels of self-esteem and confidence, leading to improved mental health.

Clear Guidelines

Homes and families that have not only open communication but clear guidelines as well tend to foster a happier home-life. When everyone living in a household knows what is expected of them, including acceptable behaviors and language and household rules, they can be confident their actions and words are appropriate and accepted. This leads to fewer arguments and less conflict.

Having clear guidelines also has a strong effect on physical and mental health, especially on those of children. This is because children who know what is or isn’t appropriate at home can be confident in their words and actions, encouraging overall confidence , better judgment and decision-making skills outside of the home.

Functional Home Design

Houses that are designed for both comfort and function tend to be happier places to live. When everyone living in a house feels they have a space that allows them to work, play, eat and rest comfortably, happiness within the home is often increased.

The functionality of a home also lends itself to overall health. When a home is well-organized and acts as a productive living space, stress levels are reduced, leading to better physical and mental health.


A home where play-time together is organic, supported and encouraged is a home that promotes healthy relationships. Whether your family enjoys playing board games, riding bikes, having a snowball fight or even swimming together, regularly spending time playing contributes to a happy home. However, be sure to practice safety when playing, and if you have a pool in your backyard, be sure to invest in an enclosure for pools, as those without one are highly dangerous.

Families that play together can also reap several health benefits from these activities. Play-time that involves any level of physicality can contribute to physical wellness. This also encourages children to incorporate physical fitness into their lives as they grow older, as playing together shows children that physical activity is fun and important.

When looking for ways to improve your family’s health and happiness, look to your home. Choose to make your living space a clean and functional place with clear guidelines, and where play and communication are encouraged. This will lead to reduced stress levels and sickness, as well as more confident and happy family members.
