Having a list of goals is important for everyone because you need something to work toward to keep yourself motivated. Your personal growth also depends on the goals you set for yourself along your journey — which help you push yourself out of your comfort zone in order to reach your full potential.

If you have a career, professional goals are especially important. Without them, you may remain in a stagnant position without room to grow, and before you know it, you may become unfulfilled and unhappy. A lack of direction can make you feel suffocated and confined.

Don’t let this happen. Set up your own list of professional goals today to be your best self and to stay on the right path in your career.

Professional goals don’t have to be super specific or even big. They can be smaller goals that lead to bigger ones — the milestones in your career. However, strive for realistic goals. After all, growth takes baby steps.

Make your list of objectives based on what you want to accomplish, then split your larger goals into smaller and more achievable ones to help you reach your ultimate goal. After that, set a plan into action. Read on for a list of professional goals anyone can use.

Find a Job You Enjoy

This goal is a big one, and it may take time. Don’t become discouraged if you send out resumes and get no response right away. The job market is competitive, especially if you live in a big city with lots of people.

Make a goal to send out three resumes every day, follow up with jobs you are really interested in, and set aside time every evening to review what you’ve already applied for and what you should apply for next. Communication is important all the time, especially when it comes to work and your career. It’s important to always be direct and concise, so the message you are trying to get across doesn’t become misconstrued. This goes for phone calls, emails and in-person conversations. Also, attitude is everything, so be aware of your tone and body language when you communicate as well.

Declutter Your Workspace

No one likes to clean, but just like at home, if you declutter often, a mess won’t build up. Identify the necessities at work, then get rid of the rest. If you have too many distractions, you won’t be able to focus on the task at hand. Organize your desk into zones, so you can better mentally shift yourself during the day.

Find or Become a Mentor

Everyone should have a mentor to coach them and offer advice. All successful mentorships require chemistry, or else the relationship may not work to the best of its ability. Choose three potential mentors, then meet with them for 10 minutes to pick their brain. In that time, you should be able to tell if they are the right mentor for you.

Consider being a mentor if one of your peers comes to you. It can be a fulfilling experience for both of you.

Learn How to Say No Politely

Don’t overextend yourself all the time. If you do, you’re going to find yourself completely overwhelmed and unable to prioritize things. If you feel like your workload is too much already and your boss asks you to take on more, politely explain which projects you’re already focused on for the week.

If it’s a co-worker asking, don’t make up excuses to soften the blow – be direct in the fact that you cannot take on anything more. Whoever it is or whatever it is, find a polite way to say no.

Chase the Career of Your Dreams

If you’re stuck at a job without any growth plan, you’re probably wasting your time. Use your energy to focus on the career of your dreams. Understand the reality that you may have to start at the bottom again, but you’ll never make your way to the top if you don’t start somewhere.

Even though it may be hard to quit your job and start all over, it will be worth it to have the career of your dreams. Don’t wonder what could have been — find out instead.

Don’t wait to set your own professional goals. Determine where you want to be and what you plan to do to get there. Understand your strengths and weaknesses, and learn how to work with them. If you carefully plan your career goals, you will achieve more than you ever imagined.
